TOPEKA — Small, non-farm businesses in 104 Kansas counties, including Franklin and surrounding counties are now eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The loans are to be used to off-set economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by the drought. SBA eligibility covers both the economic impacts on businesses directly impacted by the drought and those dependent on farmers and ranchers who suffered agricultural losses caused by the drought. Businesses may qualify for economic injury disaster loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses. These loans have an interest rate of 4 percent for businesses and 3 percent for private, nonprofit organizations for up to 30 years. Applicants may apply on-line using the electronic loan application on SBA’s secure web site at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela or by calling SBA toll-free at (800) 659-2955. The deadline to apply is Sept. 9.
