The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about a new scam working the area.  Master Deputy Jerrod Fredricks says the newest scam involves the winning of a prize.  Fredricks says the callers target elderly residents and announce they’ve won cash prizes.  However, he says the callers ask for the winner to send money to collect the prize money or provide bank account numbers.  An 85-year-old Pomona man lost $3,400 because of the scam.  Fredricks says you should never give personal information to a caller.  He says such scams are difficult to solve or prosecute.  He says if you get such a call, you are welcome to contact the Sheriff’s Office and a deputy will check out the caller.  Fredricks says the Sheriff’s Office would rather find out that the caller is a legitimate business than someone being taken by a scammer.
