MERRIAM — A vehicle malfunction caused an injury accident on I-35 in Merriam Friday morning. The Kansas Highway Patrol said Shannon Gibbs, 31, Overland Park, and John Loyd, 51, Bucyrus, were driving north on I-35 just south of 67th Street in Merriam. The axle on Gibbs’ car broke, causing her to lose control of her car, which cut into the right-lane, where it was hit by Loyd’s truck, the highway patrol said. Gibbs was taken to Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Loyd may have received injuries but the highway patrol didn’t say if he was taken to a hospital. Both were wearing seat belts.
