HAYS — The Kansas Historical Society and the Kansas Anthropological Association will hold the annual Kansas Archeology Training Program Field School June 1 – 16 near Fort Hays.  The field school will work at the presumed location of the Billy Dixon Trading Post, also known as Whiskey Ranch, south of Hays.   This site presents an opportunity to investigate the history of immediate post-Civil War era Ellis County and the culture and lives of buffalo hunters.  The annual field school allows the public to work alongside professional archeologists.   No experience is necessary. Volunteers can attend for a few days or the entire 16 days of the field school.   Participants help archeologists in surveying for sites, excavating sites and cleaning and cataloging artifacts.  Archeology technique courses are also offered and can be taken for college credit.  Registration fee before May 1 for the field school is $20 for members of the Kansas Anthropological Association or Kansas Historical Foundation. Non-member fee is $80. The price goes up by $10 after May 1. The registration packet is available on the Historical Society’s website at kshs.org/14622, or call Virginia Wulfkuhle at 785-272-8681, ext. 266.
