OTTAWA–The Ottawa Herald says it has filed a court motion to force authorities to open information about the ongoing civil and criminal cases against Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry. In her editorial Tuesday, Herald publisher Jeanny Sharp says vital information about the charges against Curry is being withheld from the public. She says the lack of information is causing a lack of public confidence in the justice system. Authorities have repeatedly refused requests for more details of the charges against Curry. She says the public has a right to know those details of the charges against the County’s chief law enforcement officer. Curry was arrested last month by Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents and charged with interference with law enforcement and official misconduct. A deputy, Jerrod Fredricks, was also arrested and charged with interference with law enforcement. They are being prosecuted by Todd Hiatt of the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office. Senior Judge John Sanders of El Dorado is serving as a special judge. An ouster hearing against Curry has been scheduled for Thursday morning. Preliminary hearings for Curry and Fredricks have been scheduled for April 1.
