OTTAWA–A 31 year career in law enforcement came to an end for Bruce Hanson, an Ottawa Police Department Detective. Hanson was honored at a retirement reception Friday at Goppert Center. Police Chief Dennis Butler says Hanson is most remembered for his kind manner with all that he met. Hanson is best remembered for a gunbattle in February 1990 with a bank robber who had just held up First National Bank. Hanson was gravely wounded, but he killed the robber. When the call came in, there was some confusion as to whether it was a fire call or crime call. This led to the Department of Public Safety being separated into the respective Fire and Police Departments.
