BOSTON — Lynette Laws and her mother Kathy Laws of Ottawa were in Boston where Lynette Laws was running in the Boston Marathon for the first time Monday. Mark Laws said his daughter Lynette had finished the race and was in the process of looking for her mother, who was near the finish line, when the blasts, which killed three people and injured at least 183 and set off chaos, occurred. After the explosions, they frantically tried to find and text each other, he said. Because cell phone services became virtually impossible after the explosions, they had to resort to texts, he said. Until his daughter texted him that she was OK, Mark Laws said he was glued to the television news, looking for faces. He said that prior to the race, the women had agreed that if they couldn’t find each other after Lynette Laws finished the race, they would meet at their hotel room. After some delays and confusion, that’s where they met, he said. Lynette Laws ran in the New York City marathon last year and said that would be her last marathon but received an invitation to the Boston Marathon this year and couldn’t resist, he said.
