GARNETT — Anderson County Attorney Brandon Jones has started an investigation into the campaign efforts of some opponents against the recent county hospital bond issue. He told the Anderson County Review that anonymous mailings and robocalls against the proposal were likely in violation of state law. Jones said he’s been looking at a post card mailed in the week before the April 2 bond election. The mailer did not include a “paid for by” identifier saying who was responsible for the advertising as is required by
state law, nor did two robocalls identify who was making them. The mailer was printed by a Shawnee company and mailed under the company’s bulk mail permit. The company’s owner did not return the Review’s calls regarding the mailer. A number of locals spoke out publicly against the bond issue on their personal Facebook pages and by other means during the campaign and did not try to hide their identities; all of which is legal. The bond issue, which would finance the building of a new hospital, passed by a margin of 130 votes or about 53 percent of the votes.
