BALDWIN CITY — A 110-year-old historic house in Baldwin City was destroyed by a fire early Saturday. The two-story house at 901 High Street was owned by Bob Bennett, who told the Lawrence Journal-World he had been renovating the house room by room. He told the paper that he suspects the fire started in a second-story bathroom where he was working. The electrical wiring upstairs was in bad shape, he said. Baldwin City Fire Chief Allen Graig said eight trucks and 125 firefighters were called to the fire and trying to keep it from spreading from other houses. Wellsville firefighters were among other departments that responded. Craig estimated damage from the fire at $150,000, which includes damage to the house and pickup truck parked in front of the garage.
