OTTAWA — Two Ottawa police officers have been promoted to the rank of sergeant. Detective Casey Crane and officer Abe Schmidt are both 13-year police veterans. Crane was reassigned from the detective unit to the patrol division where he will lead a group of patrol officers, Police Chief Dennis Butler said. Schmidt will remain assigned to patrol where he also lead a group of patrol officers. Before being promoted, both officers competed in a process that includes a writing exercise, peer panel interview, verbal presentation, performance review, and interview with Butler. Judges came from various law enforcement entities separate from the police department. Crane is an Ottawa High School and Washburn University graduate. He began his law enforcement career with the Franklin County Sheriff’s office before joining the Ottawa Police Department in 2000. Schmidt also worked for the sheriff’s office and began with the police department in 2000.
