COLONY — A 79-year-old Paola man was killed in a crash in Anderson County that involved his car and three semi-trucks Wednesday morning. David Yarnell, Paola, was driving south on U.S. 169 about three miles north of Colony when he tried to pass a semi-truck driven by Larry Manderscheid, 68, Independence, Kan., the Kansas Highway Patrol reported. Yarnell tried to pass the truck but pulled in front of a semi-truck driven by Rajinder Singh, 38, Arlington, Texas, the highway patrol said. Yarnell’s car hit the left side of Manderscheid’s flat-bed trailer and hit Singh’s truck head-on, troopers said. His car was then hit by a trailer pulled by a semi-truck driven by 55-year-old Robert Bell, 55, Ottawa. The highway patrol said Yarnell wasn’t wearing a seat belt. The three truckers weren’t injured. U.S. 169 between Colony and Welda were closed much of Wednesday.
