AMSTERDAM — For Tuesday’s Queen Day holiday in the Netherlands, the Dutch will lose a queen and be dealt a king. Dutch Queen Beatrix announced her intention in January to abdicate in favor of her son Willem-Alexander. His 9-year-old daughter Catharina-Amalia will become crown princess. He will be the first Dutch king in more than 100 years. Beatrix follows the tradition established by her mother and grandmother to abdicate and give the new monarch a chance to settle into the role with advice from the former monarch, the Ottawa, Canada, Citizen reports. The streets of Amsterdam, where the ceremony will be held, have been splashed with orange in honor of the royal family, who are of the house of Orange-Nassau.
