OTTAWA – At Ottawa High School’s assembly today, Chief of Police Dennis Butler spoke to the students about seatbelt usage rates of Ottawa High School students. Butler gave the results from a blind survey he had done with the students that started last year. A year ago, 61 percent of OHS students wore their seatbelts to school every day. This year, there was major improvement, as the number climbed to 81 percent. However, the most recent results showed a slight dip, as the number of students who used seat belts fell to 79 percent. Butler wasn’t discouraged by this, but did make a request to the student body:
“My request of you is that as soon as you leave this building and get in your car, if you’re not wearing your seat belt, please start,” Butler said. “And when we do this survey at the beginning of next year, let’s be up in the mid-80s or 90s.”
