LAWRENCE — A 22-year-old Baldwin City man has been charged with several offenses in connection with a wild race through Lawrence neighborhoods that ended with a car accident on the Haskell Indian Nations University campus late Monday night. Darron Harvey is in the Douglas County Jail. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that shortly before midnight, a Lawrence police officer stopped a car near 21st and Iowa Streets for a traffic violation. Sergeant Trent McKinley tells the paper that when the officer smelled what he believed to be marijuana and asked the driver to step out, the driver took off at a high rate of speed. He says the officer ended the pursuit because of the high speeds involved. Speeds reached 100 miles an hour. McKinley says the car drove through a residential yard before entering the Haskell campus, then hit a tree, light pole and sign. The driver fled on foot. Harvey was captured shortly after and was taken him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to be checked for injuries. He appears in court Tuesday.
