OTTAWA — The Ottawa Suzuki Sound Encounters Camp started its first full day Thursday at Ottawa University, and continues through next week. Sound Encounters attracts some of the top young musicians in the nation and world, Ottawa Suzuki Strings Director Alice Joy Lewis said. “This year’s class is exceptional,” she said. Four of the Sound Encounters students have been selected for the Brian Lewis Young Arts program, which gives individual instruction to advanced and especially gifted students and which will be the last Suzuki program of the summer, she said. Sound Encounters is the first of three Suzuki programs at OU in June. The first of the annual Sound Encounters concerts was Friday night and featured David and Juenko Garrett who will perform English and Irish music on the cello and piano. Ottawa’s own Brian Lewis will perform on the violin, accompanied by pianist Laura Kennedy Saturday night. The Sound Encounters faculty recital will be Sunday night. All of the weekend concerts will be at the Carnegie Cultural Center and are free and open to the public.
