WICHITA — The city of Wichita has backed away from plans to fine residents for wasting water for the time being.  The Wichita Eagle reports that instead, the city will double down on the city government’s own efforts at conservation.  The paper says the city will spend $75 million to drill deeper wells into the Equus Beds Aquifer and try to meet more of Wichita’s water needs from the aquifer.  The city has been depending heavily on Cheney Reservoir for its water source. Cheney Reservoir has been severely affected by years of drought.  The city will also offer incentives to residents to use rain barrels, buy high-efficiency appliances and install smart sensors on irrigation systems.
