WICHITA — On a cold Saturday morning on Jan. 16, 1965, an Air Force refueling tanker carrying 31,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into an African-American neighborhood in Wichita. Thirty people were killed, and 10 houses were destroyed and the neighborhood damaged. It was the worst aviation disaster in Wichita’s history, as well as the worst fire in the city’s history. However, historian and author D.W. Carter says the crash has largely been ignored by history. Carter’s upcoming book called “Mayday Over Wichita” examines the myths and realities of the crash while providing new insights about the horrific four-minute flight that was the worst aviation disaster in the history of Kansas. His book will be released Aug. 13 through Carter’s web site www.dwcarterbooks.com.
