GARNETT — An 88-year-old man who pulled out a pistol during a dispute over a dumped load of wheat is fighting the charges against him. Wilmer Starr, Gas, was charged in connection with the July 5 dispute in a wheat field between Welda and Colony. Authorities tell the Anderson County Review that Starr hired a custom harvesting company to cut his wheat field, but refused to pay the crew after the wheat was loaded, but before it was delivered to a local elevator. The truck driver refused to haul the load, and after exchanging words with Starr, dumped the load of wheat on the ground. Authorities said Starr then pulled out a pistol as the argument escalated. No shots were fired and no one was injured. Starr pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
