GARNETT — Tourism will be on tap when the Garnett City Commission meets at 6 p.m. today at city hall. The commissioners will consider three requests for money from the city’s tourism fund and one request to close the road around Lake Garnett. The Garnett Industrial Airport is seeking to host a radio-controlled model airplane fly-in during the Anderson County Corn Festival. The Walker Art Committee plans to stage the second annual Garnett Art Tour. The Garnett Knights of Columbus plans to the host the seventh annual Autumn Blaze barbeque contest in October. The city often offers money from the tourism fund, which comes from a special sales tax on local motel rooms, to area groups to help promote and advertise events in hopes of drawing visitors from outside the county. In addition, a car club rally featuring vintage sports cars similar to those that raced around the Lake Garnett road course many years ago is planned for Oct. 12. If the commission agrees to close the lake road, the cars will drive around the lake for about an hour during the afternoon and then park in the downtown area for a display.
