JOHN REDMOND LAKE — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will sign a new water supply contract for John Redmond Reservoir near Burlington Thursday afternoon at the Lyon County fairgrounds in Emporia. The new contract will secure 17,000 acre-feet of additional water storage at the lake. Over the years, John Redmond storage has been reduced because of significantly higher rates of sedimentation rate than expected. The lake has lost almost half of its capacity because of the sedimentation, the Kansas Water Office said. Recognizing the sedimentation rate, the state requested for a reallocation of storage 17 years ago. The state is seeking to dredge the lake beginning next year.
