EDGERTON — Mark Vanderweide, 35, Olathe, has returned home and is recovering after he was shot in the leg while driving south in Miami County Friday night along I-35, KCTV Channel 5 reported. Vanderweide, his wife and their three children were traveling in their mini-van near Edgerton road when the bullet pierced the vehicle and hit him. None of the other riders were injured. The interstate was shut down for hours as Miami, Franklin and Johnson county law officers and state troopers unsuccessfully searched the area for the shooter. Although the shooting may have been accidental, Miami County Undersheriff Wayne Minckley told Channel 5 the incident is being treated as deliberate until proven otherwise. It was the first of three highway shootings this weekend, KCTV reported. A driver was hit by a bullet while driving along I-435 near Missouri 210 in Kansas City. A motorcyclist was shot in the hand by an SUV driver Monday as he rode along I-435 in Clay County, Mo. The Miami County Sheriff’s office is asking for tips about Friday night’s shooting.
