SYRACUSE — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an incident in which the Hamilton County sheriff was arrested early Sunday morning. Sheriff Richard Garza was booked for aggravated assault following an incident at his home. The Syracuse Jjournal reported after one of his deputies responded to a call to Garza’s home and discovered the sheriff was involved, the deputy asked the Greeley County Sheriff’s Department to make the arrest. Garza voluntarily placed himself on administrative suspension pending the outcome of the investigation. Hamilton County Attorney Rob Gale requested a special prosecutor and Scott County Attorney John Shirley was appointed, the KBI said. Undersheriff Nicholas Lrug is the acting sheriff. Hamilton County has a population of 2,600 and is on the Colorado border in southwestern Kansas.
