OTTAWA — Extension officials are warning about lethal levels of blue-green algae in area ponds and lakes. Several ponds have significant levels of blue-green algae, said Rod Schaub, Frontier Extension District agricultural and natural resources agent. One area rancher lost eight head of cattle, Schaub said. Blue-green algae can occur every, but hot temperatures and calm winds can boost the algae to toxic levels, he said. As a preventative, farmers and ranchers may want to fence off ponds with algae blooms and provide fresh water points for livestock, he said. The Extension office can also test water for algae toxicity, he said.
