KANSAS — Kansas Education Commissioner Diane Debacker says she plans to send what she calls a “friendly” letter to the State Republican Party this week. The Lawrence Journal-World says her letter is a response to what she and other education leaders calls misinformation that the Party is circulating about the Common Core Standards for reading and math. The Kansas GOP State Committee adopted a resolution last weekend calling for Kansas to withdraw from the Common Core Standards. She rejects the resolution’s charges that Common Core is unconstitutional and that no one in Kansas had any meaningful input before it was adopted. She notes that Republicans on the State Board of Education support the Common Core Standards. She says Common Core is intended to raise academic expectations so students will be prepared for either college or the workforce by the time they graduate high school.
