LAWRENCE — The Kansas Department of Transportation reported lower-than-expected bids for the South Lawrence Trafficway. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that because of the bids, the project is on track to be completed by late 2016. Emery Sapp and Sons of Columbia, Missouri, bid $129.8 million to do the six-mile leg of the bypass, as well as an extension of 31st Street. The engineering estimate was $150 million. KDOT officials will spend about a week reviewing the bids before awarding the contract. The bypass would go from US-59 south of Lawrence to K-10 east of Lawrence. The project has been a source of legal and political controversy for nearly 25 years before clearing the last legal hurdle nearly a year ago.
