TOPEKA — A group long involved in anti-evolution battles in Kansas filed a federal lawsuit Thursday to block Kansas from using the new national science standards in public schools. The group, Citizens for Objective Public Eeducation, said the science guidelines promote atheism and violate students’ and parents’ religious freedom, Topeka television station WIBW Channel 13 reported. The group is also criticizing the science standards for including climate change as a key scientific concept to be taught. Lake Quivira attorney John Calvert is spearheading the lawsuit and has been a major figure in past Kansas evolution debates as a founder of the Intelligent Design Network.
