OTTAWA — The Ottawa Police Department will receive a $125,000 federal Community-Oriented Policing Services grant. In announcement this afternoon, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said the Ottawa department was one of six agencies receiving the COPS grant for hiring and training school resource officers or for other critical needs.. Overall, the COPS office funded $125 million in awards to more than 260 cities and counties across the country, aimed at creating more than 900 law enforcement positions. Those departments that received grants were selected based on their fiscal needs, local crime rates, and their community policing plans. Grissom said there was an additional focus this year on agencies requesting funding to develop school safety programs that would include the hiring of a school resource officer.
