PAOLA — It was Paola versus Osawatomie in a recent hearing on the location of the proposed Miami County jail. The Osawatomie Graphic reported a delegation from Osawatomie told Miami County commissioners that a site on the north edge of their city would be the least expensive to build a jail. However, the Graphic reported Paola officials and business owners pressed the commissioners to keep the jail in Paola’s downtown area because of the potential economic impact from moving it. In face of opposition to the original site at 311th Street and Hedge Lane northeast of Paola, commissioners decided to hold a series of new hearings about an alternative site.
