OTTAWA — At Tuesday’s meeting, Franklin County Commissioners picked the Topeka engineering firm Cook, Flatt and Strobel to redesign the driveway into the sally port at the Franklin County Jail.  The sally port is a garage where inmates can be unloaded from patrol cars.  However, now that the Sheriff’s Office uses the low-slung Dodge Charger patrol cars, the ramp into the sally port is too steep for the cars to get in.  The company will be paid $3,900 to rework the ramp.  Sheriff Jeff Richards says that now, deputies have to unload inmates outside in the parking lot and walk them into the jail, which poses safety and security problems.
