TOPEKA — The Kansas Historical Society will show the documentary film “The Harvey Girls: Opportunity Bound” Sunday afternoon at 2 at the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka. Admission is free. Filmmaker Katrina Parks tells the story of the Harvey Girls through rare interviews with the few surviving Harvey Girls and in-depth historical research of Fred Harvey and his restaurants. Harvey opened a chain of restaurants along the Santa Fe Railroad transcontinental line and provided employment opportunities to thousands of women who worked as waitresses. Harvey offered some of the few well-paying jobs to women during the late 19th century and early 20th century and the Harvey Girls had a significant impact on the settling of the American southwest.
