OTTAWA – The Ottawa Police Department is taking part in the second Global Police Tweet-a-Thon. Thousands of agencies around the world are taking part in the 24 hour tweet-a-thon to bring attention to the use of social media by law enforcement. Chief Dennis Butler says the Ottawa Police Department routinely uses Twitter, and he pointed to one case this past summer where a small child was found wandering about town and officers were unable to locate the parents. Butler says the boy’s photo was tweeted 15,000 times in a three hour span and the parents were eventually found. The Ottawa Police Department says tweeting gives the public some insight into what an officer does during a shift and the type of calls they encounter.
