TOPEKA — More than 75 members of several Kansas National Guard engineering units returned this weekend from a two-week deployment to held repair flood damage in Colorado. The group includes at least one Guard member from Garnett who goes to the Iola armory to drill. The Kansas Adjutant General’s office said they repaired U.S. 36 between Lyons and Estes Park. Because of severe flash floods, damage to the highway marooned residents in smaller, rural communities along the 25-mile stretch of damaged highway. Guard members from Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Montana finished repairs a month earlier than expected. Work included rebuilding the road, removing debris, which included cars, trees, massive boulders and chunks of the road; filling roadbed washed away by the water, and installing culverts.
