OTTAWA – The quality of some of the rental housing in Ottawa came up for discussion at the city commission’s study session Monday. Shirley Fluke, Ottawa, told commissioners there needs to be more control over landlords, some of whom rent out apartments or houses that are unsafe, unsanitary and in some cases, code violations. She offered photos showing some unsafe conditions in some rental homes, including a smoke detector that had been removed and another where basement stairs were held up by pieces of wood. “I’m concerned about the safety and well being of our senior citizens and low-income families,” Fluke said. “We need some way to license landlords.” There are also landlords well-known for not maintaining their housing, she said.
