JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Federal and state transportation and business officials held a ceremony this morning for a new railroad bridge over the Osage River near Jefferson City, Mo. Most of the $28 million for the project came from President Obama’s economic stimulus as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s high-speed passenger rail program. The new bridge eliminates the last bottleneck between Jefferson City and St. Louis and is expected to speed up the transit time for Amtrak trains running between Kansas City and St. Louis. An older single-track bridge over the river jammed passenger trains and approximately 60 Union pacific Freight trains a day, causing frequent delays.
