OTTAWA — A woman and her baby were offered a motel room by the Red Ccross after a carbon monoxide alarm sounded at the home she rents in the 500 block of North Cherry Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were sent to the home and met the woman on the front porch, Assistant Fire Chief Richard Oglesby said. When firefighters checked the home, they found that a wall furnace was emitting carbon monoxide. A Kansas Gas Service technician was summoned, who also confirmed the wall furnace was emitting carbon monoxide, he said. He shut off the gas to the furnace. Because the women expressed concern about the effect of the deadly gas on her baby, medical personnel checked the baby but didn’t find any evidence of carbon monoixide, he said. Oglesby said a technician later came and cleaned the unit, which he said had been red-flagged in September.
