OTTAWA — A powerful winter storm system moved through the Great Plains Wednesday night. The most severe part of the storm was expected to batter Oklahoma with heavy ice and snow. East central Kansas expected to catch only an edge of the system. This area will see just bitterly cold temperatures through next week, with a slight chance of snow. Nevertheless, Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards said drivers still need to get their winter drive on. Hopefully, people will drive slower,” Richards said. “If the roads do get nasty, if you still drive that fast, you probably aren’t going to stop as fast as you normally do.” Drivers should give full attention to the road and avoid texting or using cell phones, he said. And, of course, drivers should use their seat belts, he said.
