WESTPHALIA — An early morning fire forced a family to flee and caused heavy damage to a house in western Anderson County today. the family escaped the fire without injury, Anderson County Fire Department Capt. Dave Ferris said. The Red Cross has been making arrangements to find alternative lodging for the family, he said. He said a chimney flue fire was the likely cause of the fire, which spread to the attic of the house in the 23000 block of NW Arkansas Road north of Westphalia. The roof and attic received extensive damage, he said. Despite the sub-zero temperatures and heavy winds, he said firefighters were able to put out the fire relatively quickly.
