WAVERLY — Kansas City Power and Light announced today it will buy power from a proposed wind farm in Coffey County near Waverly and from a proposed wind farm near St. Joseph, Mo. Although there have been other proposals, it would be the first commercial wind farm in east central Kansas. KCP&L said the Waverly wind farm will be built and operated by the Houston-based EDP Renewables. The utility will buy 400 megawatts of power from the two new wind farms, enough electricity to power about 124,000 homes, KCP&L president and CEO Terry Bassham said. The contracts will nearly double the amount of clean, renewable generation in the utility’s energy portfolio, he said. EDP Renewables, a subsidiary of one of the largest utilities in Portugal, operates 27 wind farms in 10 states, including two in Cloud County, Kan. There have also been some interest in building commercial wind farms in southwest Douglas County near Worden and in southeastern Anderson County near Kincaid.
