TOPEKA — The sign-up period for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program begins Tuesday and continues through March 31. The program helps poor, disabled and elderly Kansans pay their heating bills, Kansas Children and Families secretary Phyllis Gilmore said. Last year, nearly 48,000 households received an average of $489 for heating bills, she said. To qualify, applicants must be responsible for direct payment of their heating bills and meet income eligibility guidelines. For example, a family of four can’t make more than $2,497 a month. Applications for the program have been mailed to households that received energy assistance last year. LIEAP applications are also available at local DCF offices and through partnering agencies. They can be requested by calling 1-800-432-0043 or go on-line at www.dcf.ks.gov.
