PALMYRA — A rural school near Baldwin City is among three Douglas County sites and among 10 Kansas sites added to the National Register of Historic Places. Clearfield School, 2162 N. 600 Road, is in Palmyra Township northeast of Baldwin City. The school was built in 1900 on a half-acre site but was moved a mile to its current location in 1908, the Kansas State Historical Society said. The school closed in 1946 but continued to serve as a meeting house for the Clearfield Grange until the 1990s. Today, the Clearfield Historical Society maintains the building. It was nominated for its local significance in the areas of education and architecture. Other Douglas County sites named to the national register are the 13-acre, 15-building University of Kansas East Historic district in Lawrence; and the Upper Wakarusa River Crossing in the 1100 block of East 1400 Road south of Lawrence. The Upper Wakarusa River Crossing is on the combined routes of the Oregon and California trails and is nationally significant as an intact river crossing of the mid-19th century.
