OTTAWA — Some rural Franklin County voters could have to drive farther to vote. County Clerk Janet Paddock and Franklin County commissioners discussed Monday whether to consolidate and close smaller voting precincts’ stations. Some of the more rural polling places have few voters, are in out-of -the way places or Paddock said she’s had difficulty in recruiting election workers. In a few years, the county will have to replace all of the aging voting machines in all of the polling stations at more than $7,000 each. There are 22 stations. Commissioners said they’re willing to consider the idea but also noted the proposal may spark some opposition from some rural residents. Among potential targets on the list, Appanoose School, the Greenwood Community Building, Hayes Township Hall, Briles Schoolhouse, and moving Ottawa third and sixth precincts from Ottawa City Hall.
