LAWRENCE — A workshop entitled “Farming Smarter, Not Harder: Planning for Profit,” will be Saturday from 8:30 to 5:15 at at Pachamama’s Alton Ballroom, in Lawrence. The workshop, held by the Kansas Farmers Union and the Kansas Beginning Farmer Coalition, will focus on the planning and analysis tools needed to run a profitable farm in an easy, step-by-step format, with additional tips for beginning farmers. Topics include planning for and making a profit, marketing strategies, the efficient farm office, key farm financial statements, common business mistakes, and goal setting. Participants should bring writing materials, a calculator, and financial and sales information about their farms. Registration is $50 for the first farm representative and $20 for additional representatives. Vermont farmer Richard Wiswall, author of “The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook,” will conduct the workshop. Register on the Kansas Farmers Union Web site at www.kansasfarmersunion.org.
