MELVERN — Area police and sheriff’s departments were searching this morning for a 15-year-old girl who was the subject of a Texas Amber Alert. Nacogdoches County, Texas, issued an Amber Alert late Tuesday night for Nomei “Mimi” Velazquez. The alert says she was with Juan Fabian Arenas Delacruz in a silver 2004 Volkswagen Passat with Texas license plates DF7T507. Authorities said her cell phone was pinged along I-35 in northeast Kansas. A vehicle matching the description in the amber alert was spotted heading north on I-35 near Melvern this morning. The car crossed the median and raced south on I-35, according to reports. Osage County deputies were in pursuit when the car left the interstate at the K-31 interchange at Melvern. Officers had been searching for the car in the Melvern, Waverly and Lyndon areas early this morning. Presently, the search has moved to the Lawrence area. The Kansas Amber Alert for Velazquez was cancelled. Nomei ‘Mimi’ Belazquez is described as having black hair and brown eyes, 4-feet, 11-inches tall and weighing 120 pounds. She was last seen wearing glasses, a white shirt, blue jeans, black tennis shoes and carrying a brown purse.
