BALDWIN CITY — Baker University’s minister, the Rev. Ira Despain, will give his “Last Lecture” 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rice Auditorium at Baker. His Last Lecture program is based on Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture” at Carnegie-Mellon University several years ago when he was dying of cancer. Each semester, the Baker Activities Council invites one person each semester to give a “Last Lecture.” Despain, a 1970 Baker graduate, will retire at the end of june after serving as an ordained minister for 42 years. He is a third-generation minister and his retirement will mark the first time in more than 100 years in which there isn’t a Despain in the clergy. Despain’s lecture will focus on living a life of moderation and balance. He said the lives people live will not be the lives they plan, and balance and moderation will help them navigate uncharted waters.
