PAOLA — Because of two special issues involving schools, most Miami County voters will be asked to show up the polls for the spring election Tuesday. The paola school district is asking for a $17 million bond issue for a variety of safety and athletic improvements. The Louisburg school board is asking to be allowed to swap mill levies. The board would reduce its capital outlay levy by one mill and raise its local-option budget by one percent. District officials said the shift to the LOB would allow the district to fill an $95,000 budget hole in the general fund next year. Both school districts say there would be no property tax increase. In other contested races, Mmichael Oldfield is challenging incumbent Gee Gee Wilhoite for the Paola City Council Precinct 2 seat. There are two city council races in Osawatomie. Mark Marquez is challenging incumbent Karen LaDuex for Ward 3 and Christina Ramirez had filed to run against incumbent John Farley for Ward 2. However, because Ramirez was appointed to fill a vacancy for the other Ward 2 seat, she said she’s no longer challenging Farley and wouldn’t accept Farley’s seat if she won the election.
