GARDNER — A South Dakota man was killed when he tried to beat a train in Gardner Tuesday evening. Pedestrian William Gainey, 52, Yankton, S.D., tried to go across the tracks ahead of a west-bound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight but he couldn’t get out of way before the train hit him, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.
