TOPEKA — Gov. Sam Brownback has signed a bill making the tylosaurus as the official state marine fossil and the pteranodon as the official state flying fossil. The new law ends a quest by dinosaur hunter Alan Deitrich of rural Overbrook to name the tylosaurus as the state fossil. The tylosauraus was a giant sea dragon that cruised the mean Crestaceous seas of Kansas.
He said it was so mean, it could have regarded another prehistoric bully, the tyrannosaurus rex, as a tasty snack. He said the designations will boost tourism and be useful for interesting kids in science.
