SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft is kicking loose its popular but old Windows XP operating system today. Since Microsoft will no longer provide security fixes for the XP operating system, computer experts sa millions of personal and business computers could be open to hacking and cyber-attacks. The magazine PC World says XP runs on about 27 percent of the world’s personal computers. Experts said it may be cost-effective to buy a new computer than to install a new operating system on an old computer. However, some Microsoft critics say that because XP is so popular, there may be companies or groups that continue to offer fixes and support for the program. Microsoft stopped selling Windows XPin 2008, but some manufacturers were allowed to sell computers with the XP system until 2010.
