GARFIELD — Barton County Commissioner Don Cates was killed Tuesday afternoon in a crop duster plane crash in Pawnee County. Cates, 67, was flying an Ag Tractor when the plane hit a power line near Garfield southwest of Larned, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. The plane went over a row of trees and nose-dived into a ditch, striking a row of hay bales and stopping in the middle of a rural road.
