OTTAWA–In case you didn’t already know it, every time you buy something in Ottawa, you are paying an extra 1/2 percent city sales tax. The tax was approved by voters and took effect in 2006, and it is to expire in 10 years, or 2016. The Ottawa City Commission has heard from the city finance department that without the tax, the city’s general fund could fall to unacceptable lows. The City Commission will consider over the next few months whether to ask voters to renew the tax beyond 2016.
